What BS 8214 is

BS 8214 is a British Standard code of practice for fire doors. Inspectors, fitters and fire risk assessors use it as a reference for good practice.

What changed in 2026

The 2026 edition was published on 20 March 2026. It now covers steel, aluminium and composite doors as well as timber.

Standard vs law

Following a British Standard is voluntary. A council, insurer or fire risk assessor may still refer to it when judging whether a door is fit for purpose, so it is worth knowing what it covers.

What it means for your inspection

I judge each door against its certification, the manufacturer's instructions and the relevant standards. Composite and metal doors get the same 11-point check as timber ones. See Fire door inspection and survey in Birmingham for what happens on the visit and Fire door inspection cost for prices.

Have your fire doors checked

Send me the address, the number of doors and any previous fire door reports. I'll confirm the scope and price before I visit.
