Fire door inspection checklist
Fire door inspection checklist for landlords, agents and building managers, based on the 11 points I check on every door. Use it between inspections. When a door needs a proper check, book online or call me.

The 11 points
I cover these points on every door, which takes me about 10 to 15 minutes a door. Print the page and take it round the property.

- 1Door leafDamage, holes, alterations or a leaf that isn't fire rated
- 2FrameFixed solid to the wall, no splits, packers or open joints

- 4Intumescent strips and smoke sealsPresent, unpainted, unbroken and the right size
Hardware

- 6CloserPulls the door shut from any angle, no wedges or hooks
- 7LatchEngages every time the door closes on its own
- 8GlazingFire rated glass, beads and glazing seals intact
Paperwork and use
- 9SignageThe right sign on the right side of the door
- 10Certification labelThe label or plug on the hinge edge that proves the rating

5 checks you can do yourself
Open each door fully and let go: it should close and latch on its own. Look for missing or painted seals, loose hinge screws and damage to the leaf or frame. Check that nothing is wedging the door open.
When to call an inspector
Call me if a door won't close or latch or the gaps look wide or uneven. Call too if the council, an insurer or a fire risk assessment has asked for a check. HMO landlords can read about HMO fire door inspections, and blocks are covered under fire door inspections for blocks of flats. See Fire door inspection and survey in Birmingham and Fire door inspection cost before you book.
